Death of an Old Friend... Wonky

There will be a special AM drive to say farewell to Wonky. Weather permitting, Pieter and Rory plan on being at Wonky's final resting place as the Sun comes up for a short visit to reflect on Wonky's life and the loss of our old friend... 5:00am CAT.

This always makes me cry! I have many animals waiting for me there... Soon we will all be together forever, I am really looking forward to seeing the many who were fatally injured or so sick they couldn't recover... or starved... or beaten to death... Animal rescue is about the most difficult job a person can undertake.

"Rainbowbridge"


Just this side of heaven there is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes across the Rainbow Bridge.


There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water, and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who have been ill and old are restored to health and vigour; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.


The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.

The happy kisses rain upon your face, your hand again caresses the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together . .

Im sorry i didnt reply to the RSVP but i was there watching, I cried so hard. I am so happy to have *known* Wonky and i will miss him so much. I remember him and chuckle at his antics at the water hole when he ripped up the new water pipe, such a special character! Thank you all at Wildearth for allowing me to know him! Love to you all xx

I will never EVER forget this. To be surrounded by so many caring, loving people- people who care about a half-crippled elephant in wild Africa; an animal that demonstrated affection for people like he did was truly awesome. To be part of this, a witness to the tragedy, and everyone so concerned about this precious life.. I've cried and cried; even if it IS just "nature"... does that mean we shouldn't be concerned or care??? Well we Do care.. We feel the pain that you felt, and we want you to know that if there was a better way to send our consolation to you we'd do it, but as it is, just know that many of us grieve with you...

Wonky will forever remain a part of our lives at Djuma. What a special animal that was there to show us courage and determination even when things aren't always perfect. WE can all honor dear Wonky.

I am sad and will surely miss Wonky. The first time I saw him I was amazed at how his presence opened my heart and made me smile. He has left a legacy of love and has opened many hearts. I want to thank him for that. He truly lives on.

Planned to attend but rain kept me away. Hopefully WE'll get to go at a later time or on another day. Sure will miss ole Wonks!

so sorry i missed it...i have just learned of Wonky's passing. If I had known, I would certainly have stayed up later. My sympathies to all who knew him well at the Preserve.
