This is my Season Greetings gift to all WE members also meant as a special thank you to Graham and Emily and all our WETeam past and present, my welcome present to Miss Mia Choe Wallington, and my welcome present to Lieschen.
Everyday brings its load of happiness and sadness, some more than others. December 10th is one of these days. While Pieter Pretorius celebrates his Birthday with Lieschen this year, WE and we are happy for him and with him.
But last year, WE and we were not in the same mood. It's on the morning drive with Rexon that Pieter confirmed the death of Blondie, the beautiful and mighty Lion king of the Kuhuma pride, role that he shared with his brother, Dozie.
Let me open the treasure chest where I keep my videos. Let's see what I can find ,,, Yes, that's an idea! ... an idea I'll follow and ... OK, let's embark on a WEmemory journey with the Kuhuma pride. By listening carefully you will also learn a lot of things about lions.
For the benefit of WE new viewers and our own pleasure, I'll review here the story of the Kuhuma pride from November 2007 to January 12th, 2008.
Let's start with the afternoon drive of November 8th, 2007, with Rexon. Our Honeymooners are Blondie and a Styx pride female. Enjoy the behaviour of this mating pair. And listen carefully, Rexon gives a lot of important informations, not only on lions' mating behaviour.

It's December 10th, 2007, the "D-day" for WE. On the morning drive with Rexon, WE and we learn that Blondie has been killed by the Mapogos. (There was some problems with the sound, you can hear Gowrie cam sound.) There is a missing moment in this drive when Pieter confirmed the death of Blondie from FCC. Alex is on cam.
Even if the clips of that drive are mostly "driving in silence" and very few sightings, I put them here because I want to share with you the emotions involved with the sad news of Blondie's death.

January 12th, 2008. That morning we were confronted with the harsh reality of wildlife in the bush. Even if we have been told that it would eventually happen, the passing weeks had somewhat eased our minds and our hopes were focused on the possibility of survival for the Kuhuma cubs. Then, on that morning the reality hit us right in the face. The cub was lying dead on a verdant bed of grass, no other sign of violence but a bloody spot on its neck; flies were already striding on its coat. What a painful sight! After, we met the killers, members of the Mapogo coalition, some feeding on the giraffe carcass and one patrolling the new territory scent-marking almost every blades of grass and trees of the late Blondie and the expatriated Dozie, the Kuhuma pride males. What an emotive sighting it was to see them so soone after the dead cub! How disturbing it was to look at them just as if they were any other lions in visit, having a free meal and not tagging them as assassins or robbers! How disconcerting it was to watch Mr. T marking the land as his, gasping at his unbelievable haircut and finding him likable! What a drive!
Pieter presented that drive. His presentation showed his own emotions from sadness to excitement, his need of a peaceful moment to decant the cub sighting before gearing up into the joy of seeing the Mapogos for the first time. He was the master of the situation. He held our hand like a father his child's. He was aware of us all the time. He explained and we understood; if we didn't immediately, his voice smoothed our path towards the next step : acceptance of the Mapogos in our world.
And as he says often : "I'm talking too much ..." Let's share this drive.

Sunrise drive 011208-4 Pieter explains the lion males behaviour. We leave. A Lizard buzzard with a prey under its talon. A Vervet monkey sits all by itself on a branch.
Sunrise drive 011208-5 Pieter stops the landy in front of a field of grass ... the grass sings in the wind, chanting the beauty of life! Soothing moment after the emotions ...
Sunrise drive 011208-6 The roads North of Gowrie dam are beautifully scenic. Birds are singing at Gowrie waterhole.
Sunrise drive 011208-7 Natal francolin. Tree pushed by elephant. Perched vulture. Pieter is expectantly excited at meeting the Mapogo males for the first time.

This Blog I wanted to be informative, matter-of-fact like. It isn't. There was too much emotions involved and emotions need to be understood before being integrated and stored in our memory, so I kept adding on more drives, more sightings. Those events are part of WildEarth and Djuma history and they are important.
Colleen, I just copied the message I received from Christina. She listened to this video carefully and she said that Rexon mentioned Manyari. ... Inspector Aquila you've got a new case to solve!
Comment by Aquila (Mod) on June 17, 2009 at 12:24am
I'm confused Claire. Are you or loverofthearts222 saying the Nkuhuma pride has lionesses named Manyari and Magwaza? I thought they were from Malilangwe, Zimbabwe?
Comment I wish to share here a comment I received on YouTube for the video below.
" loverofthearts222 Re: Your comment on my video Sunset drive 120307, part 3
Hi:) It was Manyari as I listened he mentioned her. Manyari and Manguasa are lionesses that are with 2 of the Mapongo males. There are a total of 5 of them. If you look up on youtube Mapongo male you'll see or you can go into my favorites and continue a couple pages until you start to see some of my saves. These males are awesome but for a while it was sad because they were killing other males for territories and one time a lioness and cub. I think they wanted to get rid of the cub to be with the lioness but she fought back and that was the end of it. It was sooo sad. " (loverofthearts222 = Christina, 41, United States)
I didn't know that Kuhuma lionesses had names.

A big thank you for all of that information I have not been here long and am soaking all this in. This has to be the best place on the net to see and get such incredible information and videos, and the live safari's are just out of this world the guides I have met just this past week are great just can't say enough wildearthtv
Thank you so much Claire for a very comprehensive and touching account. I enjoyed it greatly. I joined WE in August 2008 so I much appreciate the background to the Lion prides.
Thank you for this dedicated work. I had not been watching Djuma untill Jan this year, but was always reading about them in another forum. I was always wondering about their history. I will have to check out the Magopo story
Thank you, Claire, for this blog and your hard work. I remember those days like they were yesterday--it's hard to believe a whole year has passed already!
We had been quite concerned about Bo, who you may remember is a two year old male leopard who we are tracking via a GPS collar. We hadn't received any uploads from Bo's collar for three weeks and to say the least we were getting worried. However he has turned up alive and well and as you can see, he's been a busy boy. The collar stores data and uploads at set times if he is in cell phone range. Thankfully he has moved back into cell coverage. Our thanks to Lela and other ILP members who have been tracking Bo from their homes and keeping us updated. We don't always have a good Internet connection here in the bush, and rely on help from our friends. You can also join the ILP and help us track research animals. www.ingweleopard.com Written by Will Fox
We have a new member of the ILP team. Susan Belling has joined us to help with our work in conservation. Susan is a qualified Game Ranger and has recently been leading overland Safaris through main land Africa. Susan wants to pout something back into conservation and has decided to work full time with the ILP. She has been training with Gerrie and Anton over the last weeks, investigating leopard issues on local farms and tracking leopards via telemetry. She is now joining Anton on her first Black Leopard investigation at the Dalton Trust in KZN. Where she will be putting her training into action under the supervision of head researcher Anton. If you would like to welcome Susan then you can become a fan by selecting the link below. Written by Will Fox
