Just finished THE WITCH DOCTOR'S WIFE by Tamar Myers. It is a delightful novel about an naive American woman, Amanda, who goes to the Congo in about 1960 to run a guest house for missionaries. It is funny and insightful - full of typical cross-cultural misunderstandings. I think my favourite character was Protruding Navel - Amanda's housekeeper.

I am reading blood safari by deon meyer, it was inspired by the vulture restaurant of moholoholo, where the ilp research cam is lokated now! The Original title in afrikaans is "onsigbaar", the titel of the german translation is "weisser schatten", I know there are many more translations in various languages.

I am so glad I finally clicked on this forum. I have completed the #1 Ladies Detective Agency Series and LOVED it! I have a stack of books (I prefer paperback-they don't hurt when I fall asleep and bed reading and drop a book on my face-lol) ready to read and now I will have to add to that stack. Thanks for all the recommendations and comments. It helps hearing from other Africa addicts about books you have enjoyed. Thanks.

Just found this website - what a delight. I've just returned from Ingwelala, bordering Kruger. I've never seen it so dry. The ellies were eating branches. Then it rained for 5 days. What a pleasure. Had the best leopard sighting I've had in years. Large male eating an impala - no hyenas or vultures - maybe the rain stops the scent travelling? Finished a wonderful book - The Sands of the Kalahari by William Mulvihill. Gave some interesting insights about being stranded in the desert.

Has anyone else read the "Power of One" ? - a story of a pre-apartheid school aged kid growing up in Africa - very powerful...

I just finished reading "African Nights" by Kuki Gallmann. It was wonderful and I have just begun "I Dreamed Of Africa" written by her also. I highly recommend anything she has written. So beautiful and poetic. She has brought her adventures to life for me.

Before my first trip to Africa, my sister-in-law gave me the book "I Speak of Africa" by Shan Varty and Molly Buchanan - it's the story of Londolozi Game Reserve, but also a story of Africa. I would also love to get "The Leopards of Londolozi" someday - it is very expensive on the web (I guess I need to go back!) I love the #1 Ladies Detective Agency series as well. "Africa's Vanishing Wildlife" by Chris and Tilde Stuart is great.

Right now, I'm reading "In the Company of Cheerful Ladies." It's either 5th or 6th in the series of "The #1 Ladies Detective Agency, " by Alexander McCall Smith. He was born in Zimbabwe, and lives in Scotland now.

I enjoy the series of books, even more than I enjoyed the TV series.

Have you read? Guide to the Birds of East Africa by Nicholas Drayson. A novel ... two HS former rivals (now in 60s?) have a contest to name the most birds in Kenya in a week. Reminds me of the contest at Djuma..

Currently reading A Carrion Death by Michael Stanley, a police detective book set in Botswana. Not a cozy like Number one Detective.. Good writing.

Bo turns up after three weeks

We had been quite concerned about Bo, who you may remember is a two year old male leopard who we are tracking via a GPS collar. We hadn't received any uploads from Bo's collar for three weeks and to say the least we were getting worried. However he has turned up alive and well and as you can see, he's been a busy boy. The collar stores data and uploads at set times if he is in cell phone range. Thankfully he has moved back into cell coverage. Our thanks to Lela and other ILP members who have been tracking Bo from their homes and keeping us updated. We don't always have a good Internet connection here in the bush, and rely on help from our friends. You can also join the ILP and help us track research animals.

Susan joins the ILP team

We have a new member of the ILP team. Susan Belling has joined us to help with our work in conservation. Susan is a qualified Game Ranger and has recently been leading overland Safaris through main land Africa. Susan wants to pout something back into conservation and has decided to work full time with the ILP. She has been training with Gerrie and Anton over the last weeks, investigating leopard issues on local farms and tracking leopards via telemetry. She is now joining Anton on her first Black Leopard investigation at the Dalton Trust in KZN. Where she will be putting her training into action under the supervision of head researcher Anton. If you would like to welcome Susan then you can become a fan by selecting the link below.
