Have you read? Guide to the Birds of East Africa by Nicholas Drayson. A novel ... two HS former rivals (now in 60s?) have a contest to name the most birds in Kenya in a week. Reminds me of the contest at Djuma..

Currently reading A Carrion Death by Michael Stanley, a police detective book set in Botswana. Not a cozy like Number one Detective.. Good writing.

I recently read Wildflower. Its a book about Joan Root (of Alan and Joan Root -the couple who became famous for their amazing African documentaries).
What a gutsy lady!

Great group!

First i want to recomend two books, they are written in german languge:
"Der weisse Buschmann" the autobiography of Peter Stark. First he started as a poacher, but then he became a famos ranger at Namibias Etosha Park.

The second one is "Wenn es Krieg giebt gehen wir in die Wüste" by Henno Martin, he and his buddy went into the namib to avoid confinement during the worldwar2.

Unfortunatly i don't know if there is any translation of these books.

I'm so glad I checked this group out. I wasn't sure if it was a "pick a book and everybody read and discuss", but it looks more like a place to share info. Looking through the posts, I am already compiling a reading list for myself. Some of the books that I have read are listed by others, but there are some that aren't.

The Africa Diaries by Dereck and Beverly Joubert - someone alse also mentioned this.

Ghosts of Tsavo - Stalking the Mystery Lions of East Africa by Philip Caputo - explores the reasons why Tsavo lions have more of a tendency to be maneaters and also why the males are generally maneless.

We Are All The Same - A Story of a Boy's Courage and a Mother's Love by Jim Wooten - about a boy in SA, Nkosi Johnson who had AIDS. It is really inspirational. I read this on my lunch breaks at work, but had to finish it at home because I was crying so much.

Dead Reckoning - Great Adventure Writing From the Golden Age of Exploration 1800-1900 edited by Helen Whybrow. This is excerpts from explorers and adventurers journals - not all are in Africa, but a really great book.

Some art related books:

An African Experience by Simon Combes. He was an illustrator who grew up in East Africa and the book relates many stories about his life in the bush and includes his beautiful illustrations. Unfortunately he was killed in an accident a few years back.

On This Earth by Nick Brandt - gorgeous photography, B&W

The Serengeti's Great Migration - Carlo Mari & Harvey Croze - photography B&W

Also have National Audubon Society Field Guide - saw Liz mention that.

Thank you everyone for your shares!
