Gender names for the Various Species
When I'm putting titles on my pics, I'm often confused by the names given to the male, female and babies of the different animals. Some, like the ellies, are well known: Bull, cow, calf (I think LOL), but could someone in the know fill in the "dope" on some of the other species that we see on a regular basis?

These are generalized names for male, female and young..hope it helps some...
goose...gander, goose and gosling
lion...lion, lioness and cub
antelope....buck, doe, fawn
duck....drake, duck and duckling
zebra...stallion, mare and foal
warthog...boar, sow and piglet and a group is called a sounder
and you are correct in the ellies...as well as bachelor herds for the males and breeding herds who have a matriarch who leads them

Thanks EC... those are the ones I know, but I've heard Pieter call some of the various antelopes by OTHER names, such as ewe (which to me is a sheep) and I know male Impala are called rams (I think! Some days I don't KNOW anything! lol)

It's the 'plurals' I don't know.
i.e. 1 mongoose, 2 mongeese? or 2 mongooses? lol.

LOL... We have that little critter over here, and as far as I know, just like with Mooses...LOL... it's always mongoose, moose, but goose... that's geese! Is it any wonder it's hard for other nations to understand our language! LOL
We only say mongooses when we want to be funny! :-D

Interesting discussion! To add on to this, there seems to be a lot more to animal 'group' names than most people know and a lot of the names describe a (perceived) characteristic of the animals in the group. One of my fellow students at the recent Wilflife Film Acamdemy course I took, did her project on such collective nouns. Some examples are a 'float' of hippos, a 'rank' of impala, or more familiar ones like a 'cackle' of geese and a 'pride' of lions.
If you guys are interested I can ask her if she wants to join and teach us some more about this?

Sounds good to me! I always thought it was a "gaggle" of geese... no doubt got lost in pronunciation! :-D
